Growing your own weed is fun to do - and, of course, great to smoke. We have already given tips on how to grow your own cannabis. But is it actually legal in the Netherlands?
Good question. And the answer is well… not very clear. Of course that’s because of the confusing policy we have in the Netherlands, called ‘gedoogbeleid’ or ‘toleration policy’.

Max. 5 plants
In general the rule is: you can grow up to 5 plants at home. The requirement is that it is not for commercial use and that you are (logically) over 18 years. Still, there are quite a few snags.
Officially, having 5 or less plants is also illegal according to Dutch law. But, up to 5 plants the policy of tolerance applies and keeping them is not punished. If the police should happen to be on your doorstep and see the plants, there is a chance that they will confiscate them. Criminal prosecution for less than 5 plants is not something have to worry about that.
